Pap smears are a lifesaving screening tool for cervical cancer. The test can detect abnormal cells in the cervix before they become cancerous. Healthcare providers often perform HPV tests during Pap tests to check for HPV, one of the leading causes of cervical cancer.
Atypical squamous cells where high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) cant be excluded (ASC-H) is used to describe when the cells look abnormal but are more concerning for a possible pre-cancer that needs more testing and may need treatment.
Squamous cells form the surface of your cervix. This result means the squamous cells dont look normal. This could be because of an infection, including HPV. Glandular cells produce mucus in your cervix and uterus.
Atypical glandular cells: When the glandular cells do not look normal, but they have concerning features that could be cancerous, the term used is atypical glandular cells (AGC). In this case, the patient should have more testing done. Adenocarcinoma: Cancers of the glandular cells are called adenocarcinomas.
ASC-US diagnosis is an abnormal finding that requires a further evaluation from 6 months after the initial result but not later than 12 months. An ASC-US diagnosis may mean NILM or true precancer and hence poses a management challenge, which needs to be addressed by triaging with molecular testing and histology.
In most cases, the presence of abnormal squamous cells does not indicate the presence of cervical cancer. However, abnormal Pap results should always be discussed with a medical professional so that an individualized action plan can be created.
Atypical cells dont necessarily mean you have cancer. However, its still important to make sure theres no cancer present or that a cancer isnt just starting to develop. If your doctor identifies atypical cells, close follow-up is essential.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
