Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem. If the Pap smear showed that the inflammation is severe, your doctor may want to find the cause, such as an infection. You may also need to have another Pap smear in six months to see if the inflammation has gone.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Inflammation: Noncancerous changes are present. They may be due to normal cell repair. Or, they may be caused by an infection, such as HPV or yeast. Further testing may be needed. ( Also called reactive cellular changes)
The most common criteria for reactive cell change include an increase in nuclear size, presence of nucleoli, binucleation, cytoplasmic vacuolization, and polychromasia.
If inflammation is present in the cells on the Pap smear, it means that some white blood cells were seen on your Pap smear. Inflammation of the cervix is very common and usually does not mean there is a problem.
Benign changes The cells showed minor to moderate inflammation that was likely the result of an infection. A pelvic exam may be necessary to diagnose the infection and determine the best approach to treatment.
An abnormal cervical screening test result does not mean that you have cervical cancer. It means that cervical cell changes were found or that cells are infected with HPV. Depending on the results, you may need follow-up testing or treatment. Treatment for cervical cell changes works well.
Specimens from some women may also show reactive cellular changes, which is the way cervical cells appear when infection or other inflammation is around.
