These account numbers are actually tied to postal permits and serve, at least in part, as a means for the USPS to identify the postage funding source. So why havent I heard about these account numbers before?, you may be asking. The answer is, these account numbers have been assigned to all permits in the PostalOne!
The postal service requires a mail Indicia to be printed in the upper right corner from the delivery address (where the postage would normally be placed). But unlike a stamp, the post office does not have to apply a cancel imprint across an Indicia.
For a non-profit organization to be eligible for discounted bulk mail postage rates from the post office, it must complete an application at the Business Mail Center. They must pay a one-time annual fee and select one of three payment options pre-canceled stamps, postage meter, or permit imprint.
Mailers Postmark Permit, typically abbreviated with the acronym MPP, is a rubber stamp that a collector uses to postmark his or her own mail. This is done for philatelic purposes as it makes for a more interesting cover, especially when mailed to another stamp collector.
A permit imprint is a way of paying postage. Many mailers get a permit to mail with permit imprint. To keep your permit imprint account active, you must do a commercial mailing at least once every 2 years. Once your account is inactive, youll have to pay the application fee again to turn it back on.
An indicia is a printed mark placed on mail to indicate that postage has been paid. It is typically placed at the same time as any other information printed on the mail piece. An indicia is different from machine-generated postage, which is called a meter imprint.
