Follow these steps to lock cells in a worksheet: Select the cells you want to lock. On the Home tab, in the Alignment group, click the small arrow to open the Format Cells popup window. On the Protection tab, select the Locked check box, and then click OK to close the popup.
Press the Keyboard Shortcut Ctrl + A to select all the cells of the sheet. Right click and choose Format cells. Go to the Protection tab and uncheck Locked option and click Ok. Now select only the cells or columns, rows that you want to protect.
Another way to check the lock status of cells is to use the cells properties. Select the cells that you want to check. On the Home tab, in the Editing group, click Format Cells. In the Format Cells dialog box, on the Protection tab, under Locked, select the Locked check box. Click OK.
Now, select the cells you want to lock. Right-click and then click format cells. On the protection tab, check the locked checkbox and then click OK.

Extend Selection Mode If you notice some weird selection behavior going on with your mouse in Excel, take a look at the Status Bar you might see something toward the left end that says Extend Selection. Even if you dont, turning the selection mode off is easy. Just press F8.
