The goal of accreditation is to ensure that institutions of higher education meet acceptable levels of quality. Accreditation in the United States involves non-governmental entities (accrediting organizations) as well as federal and state government agencies (these three entities are formally known as the Triad).
Regional accreditation tends to have more rigorous quality standards than national accreditation. Institutions with national accreditation may still have rigorous, high-quality programs, but higher quality standards are ensured for regionally accredited institutions.
Legitimate accrediting agencies are recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the U.S. Department of Education. These agencies docHub that schools meet certain standards of academic excellence.
Types of accreditation. There are three main types of accreditation: national, regional, and specialized accreditation that apply to certain academic programs.
With an accredited institution, a student has some assurance of receiving a quality education and gaining recognition by other colleges and by employers of the course credits and degrees earned.
An accredited programme receives an accreditation level (Level I, II, III or IV). The higher the accreditation level, the more benefits there are. For example, from accreditation level 1 (Level I) onwards, educational institutions no longer need to apply for an SO number from the CHED for that study programme.
Level 3 accreditation is for 75 contact learning hours and is designated as MCC Accredited Education. Graduates from a Level 3 education and training program may apply for the Master Certified Coach (MCC) Credential using the MCC application path if they meet the credentialing application requirements.
Institutional Accreditation This is a means for colleges and universities to assess their own performance and compare themselves with other schools. If a school is awarded accreditation means that the institution meets certain standards of educational quality.
Is accreditation or certification mandatory? No. Health care organizations, programs, and services voluntarily pursue accreditation and certification.
Definition of Accreditation Accreditation is the recognition from an accrediting agency that an institution maintains a certain level of educational standards. The U.S. Department of Education maintains a database of accrediting agencies it recognizes.
