She writes, I was told the BMI chart is somewhat inaccurate as it doesnt take into account muscle mass which is heavier than fat and many other factors. Is there any other weight maintaining/losing test out there that is more accurate? And this is a very astute observation because the BMI, Body Mass Index, is Look, its still used but its not the end all be all. And its just interesting that she asked this question because theres a period of time where I was considered overweight because I had a fair amount of muscle mass. The BMI was introduced in the early 19th century by a Belgian named Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet. He was a mathematician, not a physician. He produced the formula to give a quick and easy way to measure the degree of obesity of the general population to assist the government in allocating resources.
Research suggests that BMI alone frequently misclassifies metabolic health, which is linked to how much fat a person has and how it is distributed. And, BMI may be particularly unreliable during pregnancy, for athletes, and the elderly.
BMI (body mass index), which is based on the height and weight of a person, is an inaccurate measure of body fat content and does not take into account muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, and racial and sex differences, say researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.
Since it doesnt distinguish between weight from fat and weight from muscle or bone, BMI isnt very accurate at judging how much body fat people have which is the key issue when it comes to preventing weight-influenced diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
While BMI is a rough estimate of body fat, body fat percentage is a more accurate number. BMI, but not overfat. Likewise, a person of normal weight on the BMI scales may still be overfat and at risk of weight-related diseases.
The problem is that BMI as a measure of individual fatness is inherently flawed, because it is derived using purely your weight and your height. Thus it cannot, for instance, differentiate between a rugby player or a powerlifter and a Joe Public of similar height and weight, but carrying substantially more fat.
BMI in the traditional sense is used as a measure for health risk. It cannot, however, provide an indication of someones health habits. BMI does not tell you what someone eats, how they move their body, the quality of their sleep, or their stress levels all things that influence health.
