An Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, is a unique 9-digit number assigned by the IRS to entities for tax purposes. EINs never expire, and once an EIN is assigned to an entity, it will not be reissued even if the entity disappears.
Call the IRS. The best number to call is (+1) 800-829-4933. You can call during IRS Business hours: 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5). The shortest wait times are typically from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m ET. Depending on your phone service and where you are located, there may be fees when calling the IRS.
Employer Identification Number: In order to reinstate your tax-exempt status, you will need to complete an Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) (Form 1023). An application is necessary for reinstatement even if you werent originally required to apply for tax-exempt status.
The IRS cannot cancel your EIN. Once an EIN has been assigned to a business entity, it becomes the permanent Federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity.
The primary difference between these tax identification numbers and Employer Identification numbers is that a TIN is used to identify people who can be taxed within the United States, while the EIN is used to identify companies. Therefore, the difference is in the way the EIN and tax ID numbers can be used.
Sole proprietors must file Schedule C (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR), Profit or Loss From Business, with their Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, or Form 1040-SR, U.S. Tax Return for Seniors, for the year in which they go out of business.
Steps to Take After Receiving a 1099 TIN Mismatch Notice This is to ensure that the mismatch isnt due to a simple typo, which can be corrected in future filings. Contact the Vendor: If the information matches your records correctly, the next step is to contact the recipient of the 1099 to request a corrected W-9 form.
The IRS cannot cancel your EIN. If you receive an EIN but later determine you do not need the number (the new business never started up, for example), the IRS can close your business account.
