If an AMI is deregistered, current instances will not be affected, but it cannot be used to launch new instances. Existing instances already using the AMI will not be impacted and will continue to incur instances charges. This means that when a user is finished with an instance, it should be terminated.
To delete terminated EC2 Instances, locate the instance you want to delete in the EC2 Console under the Instances page. Click on the instance and select the Terminate option. Once youve selected terminate, you will receive a pop-up confirmation. Click Yes to confirm.
You cant delete a snapshot of the root device of an EBS volume used by a registered AMI. This consideration applies even if the registered AMI is deprecated or disabled. You must first deregister the AMI before you can delete the snapshot. For more information, see Deregister your AMI.
You cant update the AMI of an instance without replacing it with a new instance. Typically you simply run the operating system updates - yum update / apt update upgrade / windows update.
To delete a snapshot using the console Open the Amazon EC2 console at . In the navigation pane, choose Snapshots. Select the snapshot to delete, and then choose Actions, Delete snapshot. Choose Delete.
Deleting an instance On the AWS Supply Chain console dashboard, from the dropdown, select the instance that you want to delete. Choose Delete. On the Delete AWS Supply Chain Instance page, under Confirmation, type delete to confirm that you want to delete the instance. Choose Delete.
Disabling an AMI changes its state to disabled, makes the AMI private if it was previously shared, and prevents any new EC2 instance launches from that disabled AMI.
Go to the AWS EC2 console and AMI section. Select the desired AMI. Next, select the Deregister option in the Actions tab. Select the Continue option to deregister.
