These tears almost always need to be treated surgically, typically using a minimally invasive approach called arthroscopy. While a very few patients may restore some of their lost function without surgery, the knee will remain unstable, and that means the chances of reinjuring it are very high.
An ACL injury is most common among athletes they also have a bigger chance of re-tearing their ACL, especially if they fail to follow rehabilitation guidelines, which begin as early as the day of the ACL surgery.
While the procedure is very successful, some patients will have a re-tear of the ACL and tear the reconstructed graft. In these cases, a revision ACL reconstruction is typically recommended by Dr. Jeff Padalecki, Austin, Round Rock, and Cedar Park, Texas communities orthopedic knee surgeon, as an ACL re-tear treatment.
If you tear your ACL, youll probably need surgery to repair it. Most people who tear their ACL make a full recovery and resume playing sports with no long-term consequences. The recovery time for a torn ACL is usually six to nine months.
Mayo Clinic sports medicine surgeons routinely perform revision surgery for patients who have undergone one or more ACL reconstructions elsewhere, and have published extensively on this topic.
The risk, percentage-wise, of retearing the ACL is about 5%, which puts you at about even with the other knee.
After an ACL reconstruction, up to 14% of patients go on to suffer a graft rupture, an ACL re-rupture [8]. Several risk factors for suffering an ACL re-rupture have been identified, including younger age, high activity level, female sex, and the use of allograft [9,10,11].
The answer is no. An ACL scar will not completely disappear however, following the steps mentioned above will help you to improve and ensure the best healing possible for your incision.
