What Is Undo? Every Oracle Database must have a method of maintaining information that is used to roll back, or undo, changes to the database. Such information consists of records of the actions of transactions, primarily before they are committed. These records are collectively referred to as undo.
Query for monitoring undo tablespace usage by transaction Session information using or accessing the undo tablespace. ( Whether or not there is a change transaction using the undo realm. Whether there is a query transaction accessing the undo area. Last SQL statement and execution time of transaction.
Since the default undo management mode is MANUAL , the instance must be told to use AUTO mode at instance startup. To do this the following initialization parameters can be set. UNDOMANAGEMENT = AUTO # Default is MANUAL UNDOTABLESPACE = undotbs01 # The name of the undo tablespace.
For a fixed-size undo tablespace, the database calculates the best possible retention based on database statistics and on the size of the undo tablespace. You can determine the current retention period by querying the TUNEDUNDORETENTION column of the V$UNDOSTAT view.
When automatic undo management is enabled, there is always a current undo retention period, which is the minimum amount of time that the Oracle Database attempts to retain old undo information before overwriting it.
The amount of time for which undo is retained for the Oracle Database for the current undo tablespace can be obtained by querying the TUNEDUNDORETENTION column of the V$UNDOSTAT dynamic performance view.
Do one of the following: Set undoretention in the initialization parameter file. Undoretention = 1800. Change undoretention at any time using the alter system statement: Alter system set undoretention = 2400;
In order to remove datafiles added unnecessarily to UNDOTBS1 and reduce its size: Create a new undo tablespace as : SQL create undo tablespace UNDOTBS2 datafile. Change parameter UNDOTABLESPACE. SQL alter system set UNDOTABLESPACE=UNDOTBS2; Drop UNDOTBS1.
