The amount of time for which undo is retained for the Oracle Database for the current undo tablespace can be obtained by querying the TUNEDUNDORETENTION column of the V$UNDOSTAT dynamic performance view.
To change the size of the undo tablespace in Oracle, you can either resize an existing datafile or add a new datafile to the tablespace. -- Resizing datafile. SQL ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE /opt/oracle/oradata/XE/XEPDB1/undotbs01.
If an active transaction requires undo space and the undo tablespace does not have available space, then the system starts reusing unexpired undo space. This action can potentially cause some queries to fail with the snapshot too old message.
Implicit undo tablespaces are created in the default undo directory and they are not permitted to be dropped. But they can be made inactive with; ALTER UNDO TABLESPACE `innodbundo001` SET INACTIVE; Both implicit undo tablespaces will be made active at bootstrap and remain active until they are SET INACTIVE.
The UNDO tablespace works as follows: * The UNDO records are not deleted when they are expired. They stay and are overwritten only when a new UNDO record needs to be written and there is no free space. Thus, it is normal for UNDOTBS1 to appear at 99% full.
Your production database has semiannual or annual purging programs which generate huge redo. Due to this requirement, your undo tablespace grows rapidly and occupies most of the space on file system. The purging process is run only few times a year.
Thus the only solution to accomplish the goal are as follows : Create a new undo tablespace(The following command will create the Bigfile tablespace with the size of 100MB initially) : Set the new tablespace as the undo tablespace to be used: Once the above step is done then drop the old undo tablespace:
An auto-extending undo tablespace named UNDOTBS1 is automatically created when you create the database with Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA). You can also create an undo tablespace explicitly. The methods of creating an undo tablespace are explained in Creating an Undo Tablespace.
