In general, a pap smear is painless. This is the same regardless of sexual and reproductive history.
Its still possible to get your Pap smear done despite being on your period. However, there may be a risk of inaccurate results, especially if your flow is heavy during the day of your exam. As a rule of thumb, its best to call your OB-GYN if you have a Pap scheduled and have unexpectedly started your period.
A cervical screening shouldnt affect your menstrual cycle and bring on your period early. However, its quite common to experience a little bit of bleeding or spotting in the first few hours after youve had your smear. Heavy bleeding after your smear isnt normal. If this happens, you should speak to your GP.
Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous. Abnormal Pap tests are very common. In fact, of the 3 million women with abnormal Pap tests each year, less than 1% (13,240 cases) will be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
QA: Can getting a Pap smear a few days before your period affect your period when it comes on? No, getting a Pap smear will not affect your period.
Can you get a Pap smear or pelvic exam on your period? The answer is yes! If youve scheduled an appointment with your gynecologist and youre on your period, there is no need to cancel the appointment. Normal vaginal bleeding should not get in the way of a Pap smear or pelvic exam.
If bleeding after a Pap smear is from normal causes, such as a cervical scratch, the bleeding should stop within a few hours. Spotting may last up to two days, but the bleeding will become lighter. Avoid sex and dont use a tampon in the two to three days following a Pap smear if youre experiencing bleeding.
However, bleeding usually happens due to the cervix being irritated by the test, rather than an indicator that something is wrong. A small amount of blood (also known as spotting), is normal. Its quite common and it can happen for many reasons, which we talk through in the rest of this blog..
