ACL healing process. The graft healing process after ACL reconstruction involves three phases: early healing phase, proliferative phase and ligamentization phase.
By the end of the second or third week, patients usually walk without crutches. Sessions with a physical therapist usually begin seven to 14 days after surgery. During physical therapy, weight bearing is allowed if you did not have a meniscus repair.
Within 2-3 weeks you should achieve full knee extension and 90 degrees knee flexion.
Recovering from an ACL injury As you might expect, the more severe the damage, the more unstable your knee joint moving forward. You can recover from an ACL injury, even partial and complete tears. But the ligament doesnt technically heal, which increases your chances of persistent problems with knee instability.
Recovering from ACL reconstruction It usually takes about six months to a year to make a full recovery from ACL reconstruction.
Surgery for an ACL Injury We consider non-surgical treatments first, but if the tear is complete and the knee is unstable, or the knee doesnt heal with non-surgical treatment, surgery may be necessary. The ACL cannot heal on its own because there is no blood supply to this ligament.
A person with a partial ACL tear may have knee pain, swelling, and joint instability but the degree of all three may depend on the extent of the tear and the individual patient.
After surgery, recovery time usually takes a minimum of 9 months. This includes the initial healing phases postsurgery and physical therapy. Its very important to wait until your ACL reconstruction has healed completely before returning to sports in order to prevent reinjury.
