This particular kind of outline is known as a REVERSE outline. No, not like that. A reverse outline is a kind of record of what youve already writtenwhich may not be exactly what you intended to write. This can help you get back on track and fix any problems with your papers organization. It can also show you new directions that your writing might take into previously unexplored territory. Heres how it works. Say youve written a paper about your universitys traditions. As you read over what youve written, identify what each paragraph is focused on. You can either write this on a separate document or just jot it down in the margin. Reverse outlining is very beneficial because it forces you to identify the essential parts of your essay. You will want use reverse outlining to ensure your thesis statement connects with your body paragraphs and your body paragraphs then connect with your sentences.
Reverse outlining is simply making an outline AFTER an essay has been written. For every paragraph, write the main idea or main argument in a small number of words in the margin next to that paragraph. This process allows you to see the structure or progress of an essay in a quick and clear way.
How to Create and Use a Reverse Outline Start a new document or use a blank piece of paper. List the main idea of each paragraph, working systematically through the entire paper. Number your outline for ease of reference. Edit your writing, expanding or condensing passages to achieve greater concision and clarity.
A reverse outline should go paragraph by paragraph. Read one paragraph at a time and write the main idea of each paragraph in the margins of your paper (remember that for your first paragraph, the main point should be your thesis statement!!!) Then list these points, paragraph by paragraph, on another piece of paper.
One helpful strategy to revise your draft at this stage of the writing process is the reverse outline: An outline that is constructed after you have a working draft of your paper. In a reverse outline, you summarize each main point of your paper in manageable sentences.
Some assignments ask you to read and analyze complex information. In these cases, reverse outlining can help you distill the main ideas into short, clear statements. You may also use reverse outlining to revise your own work.
You will want use reverse outlining to ensure your thesis statement connects with your body paragraphs and your body paragraphs then connect with your sentences. You will want to highlight your thesis statement and topic sentences to first check if your topic sentences support the main argument of your paper.
