Be yourself. Weve all heard it before, but is it good advice? Well, sure, except that its maybe a little too simplistic to cover every situation. Yes, be yourselfunless you dont know who that is, or unless you think its someone different from who you actually are, or unless youve got too many selves to be all of them at once, or unless youre mean or selfish or closed-minded or conceited or dishonest, in which caseyeah, go ahead and work on that. Usually, the more we look at an issue, the more we can see the complexity lurking behind the easy answers, and the less useful we find simplistic advice, like be yourself. Thats why the best stories and novels usually try to avoid it. Instead, they show the big, complicated questions beneath the advice, like how do you know who you are, and where does identity come from? They develop themes, in other words. Not morals. A theme is a central, unifying idea. Its the bigger issue that emerges as the characters pursue their goals. It has l

Often, motifs reinforce the themes of the story. To be clear, motif is not the same as themebut motifs can be the breadcrumbs that lead us to discover the theme, or support and reinforce it. Finally, motifs can evoke other moments in the story to remind us of the connection between scenes.
Motifs are recurring images, quotes, or concepts that take on a figurative or symbolic meaning throughout the story. Motifs are used to tie the readers into the story and to help them understand some of the important concepts in a given work. A motif will often come up again and again at important moments in a story.
When a motif works on multiple levels--telegraphing the inner desires or fears of characters, setting mood, and conveying the theme--it can make the story resonate deeply. Not every story lends itself to the use of motif.
Leitmotif is a term originating from opera, where it referred to a recurring melody that played along with a character or allusion to a theme whenever one or the other appeared on stage. Once more commonly spelled leitmotiv, it derives from the German words for leading (leit) and motive (Motif).
Motifs are recurring concepts that are used to reinforce themes. They can be thought of as smaller aspects of a theme but are more specific. Themes are broad, overarching lessons that the author is trying to instill in the reader. Themes are broader than motifs.
Motifs underline an idea in your particular story in a way that readers understand on a subconscious level. This creates depth and emotional resonance without the need to state your theme too overtly.
Examples of this motif include Romeo comparing Juliet to the sun, the two of them discussing the light of the moon, descriptions of their love as a lightning strike, and the Friar comparing their love to fire and gunpowder. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck: the motif of soft things returns over and over in the novel.
The phrase so it goes is an example of a motif: a recurring story element with symbolic significance. Motifs direct readers attention to larger themes and engage them on an intuitive level. They are great tools for creating depth in your writing.
