Information debug symbols provide File names: Helps programmers correlate the compiled code with the corresponding source code files. Stack traces: When an error or crash occurs in a program, debug symbols can provide a stack trace, which shows the sequence of function calls leading up to the error.
There may be several symbols and debugging information in binaries. This information isnt required for the correct execution of an executable. Stripping them from the binary leads to a smaller binary size, which may be crucial, especially in embedded systems.
To change binary code into text, which is what humans can read, you have two ways. First, convert the binary numbers into decimal or hexadecimal. Then, you find what letters or symbols they stand for using a chart called ASCII. Or you can simply use an online tool that does all the work for you.
A strip command with the --strip-unneeded option removes all debug symbols from a binary or library. It also removes all symbol table entries not needed by the linker (for static libraries) or dynamic linker (for dynamically linked binaries and shared libraries).
You can remove all the debug symbols by using the strip -g command. You can also use the sudo update-alternatives --config java to complete this check.
To remove debugging symbols from a binary (which must be an a. out or ELF binary), run strip --strip-debug filename. Wildcards can be used to treat multiple files (use something like strip --strip-debug $LFS/tools/bin/*).
