Use the right-click menu instead. Right-click the icon (or hold down Control and click). Hover over Options. Select Remove from Dock. If the Options sub-menu says Keep in Dock as well, the program is open. Click Keep in Dock to uncheck that option, and the program will disappear from the Dock once you close it.
If you mistakenly press the hotkey for the setting, Option - Command - D, you may activate the Mac Dock disappeared. Change the location to reappear the Dock by pressing Option - Command - D once again to put Mac Dock back and in its always-visible position.
Open System Preferences, select Dock, and check or uncheck Automatically hide and show the Dock. Or, use the keyboard shortcut Command(⌘)+Option+D to toggle the Dock to show or hide. Remove an item from the Dock: Drag the item out of the Dock until Remove is shown. Only the alias is removed; the actual item remains on your Mac. If you accidentally remove an app icon from the Dock, its easy to put it back (the app is still on your Mac). Open the app to make its icon appear again in the Dock.
