An undo log is a collection of undo log records associated with a single read-write transaction. An undo log record contains information about how to undo the latest change by a transaction to a clustered index record.
What Is Undo? Every Oracle Database must have a method of maintaining information that is used to roll back, or undo, changes to the database. Such information consists of records of the actions of transactions, primarily before they are committed. These records are collectively referred to as undo.
This allows system to perform redo and undo operations as appropriate: Undo: using a log record sets the data item specified in log record to old value. Redo: using a log record sets the data item specified in log record to new value.
The principle differences between undo and redo logging are: 1. Undo logging cancels the effects of incomplete transactions and ignores committed ones; redo logging ignores incomplete transactions and redoes committed ones as necessary. 2.
Undo allows you to take back data entry changes by storing a collection of data maintenance actions. Redo lets you restore the change that was undone. Under certain circumstances, for example, when you change to a different client, the collection of actions ends and you can no longer use undo or redo.
We just learned that you undo logs with exponentials by exponentiating. This time, the base of my log is 2, which means I have to use the same base in my exponential, so I put in 2(log2 (5x)) = 210. That undoes the log on the left, I just get 5x, and on the right 210 = 1,024.
UNDO is used to rollback transactions. REDO records changes to the original data, and is important for transactions that are not committed at the time of a crash or failure. REDO is used to roll forward transactions.
