Other types of infectionsuch as those caused by bacteria, yeast, or protozoa (Trichomonas)sometimes lead to minor changes on a Pap test called atypical squamous cells. Natural cell changes that may happen during and after menopause can also cause an abnormal Pap test.
If a false positive result occurs, the doctor may recommend the use of a different test to confirm the results. The possibility of false-negative results also exists. It is recommended to regularly receive a Pap smear as a part of a womans annual wellness exam.
In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection.
Most tests come back normal, but a docHub portion come back as unclear, which could be called inconclusive or ASC-US. Unclear results could mean that you have some cells that dont look quite like they should, but cant be classified as abnormal.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
Abnormal Pap smear results are common. ing to the National Institutes of Health, 3.8% of Pap tests come back abnormal. Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous.
Its up to 30 percent of people [who] are falsely positive. Women who have a positive Pap smear generally get a colposcopy, which is an even closer examination of the cervix, vagina and vulva for signs of disease. A false positive could mean going through a biopsy during a colposcopy.
Treatment for high-grade cervical cell changes Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) uses a thin wire loop, through which an electrical current is passed, to remove abnormal tissue. This procedure is typically done in a doctors office. Cold knife conization uses a scalpel to remove the abnormal tissue.
