An undo log is a collection of undo log records associated with a single read-write transaction. An undo log record contains information about how to undo the latest change by a transaction to a clustered index record.
Undo logging cancels the effects of incomplete transactions and ignores committed ones; redo logging ignores incomplete transactions and redoes committed ones as necessary.
When a change is made to the database, Db2 logs an undo/redo record that describes the change. The redo information is required if the work is committed and later must be recovered. The undo information is used to back out work that is not committed.
When a transaction modifies data, Oracle Database copies the original data before modifying it. The original copy of the modified data is called undo data. Saving this information is necessary for the following reasons: To undo any uncommitted changes made to the database if a rollback is necessary.
Redo Log Contents Redo entries record data that you can use to reconstruct all changes made to the database, including the undo segments. Therefore, the redo log also protects rollback data.
Undo logs exist within undo log segments, which are contained within rollback segments. By default, rollback segments are physically part of the system tablespace, but they can also reside in undo tablespaces. For more information, see Section 14.6. 3.3, Undo Tablespaces.
Undo allows you to take back data entry changes by storing a collection of data maintenance actions. Redo lets you restore the change that was undone.
An undo log record contains information about how to undo the latest change by a transaction to a clustered index record. If another transaction needs to see the original data as part of a consistent read operation, the unmodified data is retrieved from undo log records.
