now that we understand the different ways of logging lets talk about different recovery protocols the first one undo logging is one of the basic recovery protocols as we will see undo logging does not use right ahead logging that we covered earlier and it uses the force and steel mechanisms in terms of buffer pool management there are four types of lock records in an undo log start commits or abort of a transaction and finally an update record which states that transaction t wants to update data elements x and x previous value was v the idea behind undo logging is as follows we want to use the lock such that when we need to recover we will undo the effects of all the transactions that have not been committed on the other hand for all the transactions that have been committed we want to leave them alone in order to implement this behavior we need to establish a few rules regarding how we do logging and when to flush the dirty lock and data pages specifically there are two rules that w

Every Oracle Database must have a method of maintaining information that is used to roll back, or undo, changes to the database. Such information consists of records of the actions of transactions, primarily before they are committed. These records are collectively referred to as undo.
Undo data is stored in a logical database structure called an undo tablespace. The undo tablespace is of finite size, so records might be overwritten as transactions occur. Oracle saves undo data at least until the transaction has been committed. Until this time, the undo data is in the active state.
Undo tablespaces contain undo logs, which are collections of records containing information about how to undo the latest change by a transaction to a clustered index record. Undo logs are stored in the system tablespace by default but can be stored in one or more undo tablespaces instead.
To undo the most recent data entry, press CTRL+Z.
Such information consists of records of the actions of transactions, primarily before they are committed. These records are collectively referred to as undo. Undo records are used to: Roll back transactions when a ROLLBACK statement is issued.
When a transaction modifies data, Oracle Database copies the original data before modifying it. The original copy of the modified data is called undo data.
Undo allows you to take back data entry changes by storing a collection of data maintenance actions. Redo lets you restore the change that was undone.
Oracle strongly recommends that you use undo tablespace to manage undo rather than rollback segments. Space for undo segments is dynamically allocated, consumed, freed, and reused all under the control of Oracle Database, rather than by DBA.
View Undo storage. Use the following queries to view undo tablespaces and rollback segments: SELECT * FROM DBATABLESPACES WHERE CONTENTS = UNDO; SELECT * FROM V$PARAMETER WHERE NAME = undotablespace; Use the following queries to view undo statistics: SELECT * FROM V$ROLLSTAT; SELECT * FROM V$UNDOSTAT;
With automatic undo management, undo data is stored in an undo tablespace. Undo tablespaces have additional properties beyond those of permanent tablespaces. There can be multiple undo tablespaces, but only one can be active for an Oracle instance.
