The answer is that you cannot replace the AMI for an existing EC2 instance. However, you can replace the root volume with a new volume which is basically the same thing. That new root volume can come from another EC2 instance.
You cant update the AMI of an instance without replacing it with a new instance. Typically you simply run the operating system updates - yum update / apt update upgrade / windows update.
Restore the AMI from an EBS snapshot When you delete or deregister an Amazon EBS-backed AMI, any snapshots created for the volume of the instance during the AMI creation process are retained. If you accidentally delete the AMI, then you can launch an identical AMI using one of the retained snapshots.
Log into the AWS Management Console, navigate to the EC2 dashboard, and select the instance you want to modify. Choose the Actions menu, then Instance State, and click Stop. Remember, the instance must be completely stopped; hibernation wont suffice for this process.
Updating AMIs. Update a Linux AMI. Update a Windows Server AMI. Update a golden AMI using Automation, AWS Lambda, and Parameter Store. Using AWS Support self-service runbooks. Run the EC2Rescue tool on undocHubable instances. Reset passwords and SSH keys on EC2 instances. Passing data to Automation using input transformers.
Both the EBS snapshot and the AMI are automatically stored on Amazon S3 which is known for being highly durable and reliable. (Learn more with this post: 3 Ways To Backup And Recover EC2 Windows Instances) Most of the recently introduced tools, including the ones discussed below, focus on EBS volumes alone.
Lets dive right in.. Step 1: Create Image from Running Instances. From the EC2 console, select the Actions button on the running instance, It gives a dropdown; click on Image and templates, then select Create Image. You will see the AMI creation page. Step 2: Edit AMIs Permission. Step 3: Launch Instance from AMI.
In the navigation pane, choose Backup vaults. Select the backup vault that contains the Amazon EC2 backups. Then, choose the AMI you want to delete. Choose Actions, and then choose Delete.
