First, it is a shared resource among all users in the database. If one session uses up all the temporary tablespace, all other users that require it for some operation that are assigned to that temporary tablespace will be affected and will eventually get the ORA-1652 error.
Purpose. Temporary tablespaces contain data that persists only for the duration of a users session. Oracle uses temporary tablespaces as work areas for tasks such as sort operations for users and sorting during index creation. Oracle does not allow users to create objects in a temporary tablespace.
You enable retention guarantee by specifying the RETENTION GUARANTEE clause for the undo tablespace when you create it with either the CREATE DATABASE or CREATE UNDO TABLESPACE statement. Or, you can later specify this clause in an ALTER TABLESPACE statement.
Oracle DB uses UNDO tablespace for keeping track of undo change vectors, which are used to provide features such as transaction rollback, read consistency, flashback query, and more. Each undo change vector is an instruction to reverse data modification.
To change to automatic undo management, you must first create an undo tablespace and then change the UNDOMANAGEMENT initialization parameter to AUTO . If your Oracle Database is release 9i or later and you want to change to automatic undo management, see Oracle Database Upgrade Guide for instructions.
If a transaction needs to be rolled back or if theres a need for a read consistency, the undo data is used to revert the changes. On the other hand, a temp tablespace is used for temporary storage during database operations, such as sorting or joining data.
About Undo Data When a transaction modifies the database, Oracle copies the original data before modifying it. The original copy of the modified data is called undo data.
If an active transaction requires undo space and the undo tablespace does not have available space, then the system starts reusing unexpired undo space. This action can potentially cause some queries to fail with the snapshot too old message.
