Oracle DB uses UNDO tablespace for keeping track of undo change vectors, which are used to provide features such as transaction rollback, read consistency, flashback query, and more. Each undo change vector is an instruction to reverse data modification.
The UNDO tablespace works as follows: * The UNDO records are not deleted when they are expired. They stay and are overwritten only when a new UNDO record needs to be written and there is no free space. Thus, it is normal for UNDOTBS1 to appear at 99% full.
What Is Undo? Every Oracle Database must have a method of maintaining information that is used to roll back, or undo, changes to the database. Such information consists of records of the actions of transactions, primarily before they are committed. These records are collectively referred to as undo.
An Undo Tablespace in Oracle Database plays a pivotal role in managing undo data generated during transactions. Undo data is essential for maintaining data consistency and supporting features like transactions, read consistency, and database recovery.
Eventually, after all active transactions have committed, the undo tablespace automatically goes from the PENDING OFFLINE mode to the OFFLINE mode. From then on, the undo tablespace is available for other instances (in an Oracle Real Application Cluster environment).
Redo is the information Oracle records in online (and archived) redo log files in order to replay your transaction in the event of a failure. Undo is the information Oracle records in the undo segments in order to reverse, or roll back, your transaction.
UNDORETENTION specifies (in seconds) the low threshold value of undo retention. The system retains undo for at least the time specified in this parameter and automatically tunes the undo retention period to satisfy the undo requirements of the queries.
