A laborer on the ranch. Carlson is an aggressive man who owns a Luger pistol which he prizes and cherishes. He leaps at any opportunity to use his gun, including when he shoots Candys old dog and offers to try to shoot Lennie after he kills Curleys wife.
Each of the characters represents a kind of person in American society and often one that is a victim of discrimination. For example, Crooks represents a segment of American society that is discriminated against because of race; Curleys wife, because of gender; Candy, because of old age and physical handicap.
For example, Crooks represents a segment of American society that is discriminated against because of race; Curleys wife, because of gender; Candy, because of old age and physical handicap. Carlson is a perfect example of a selfish oaf, interested only in his creature comforts and oblivious to any one elses feelings.
While George is the main protagonist of the story (though the same could be argued about Lennie), Of Mice and Men has many other interesting characters despite its short length. These include the antagonist Curley, the farmhands Carlson and Slim, the swampers Candy and Crooks, and Curleys wife.
He is introduced in Chapter Two as a powerful, big-stomached man. Right away, he is concerned with the dog which belongs to the old swamper Candy. Carlson claims the dog is worthless and so God damn old he cant hardly walk. He suggests that Slim get Candy to shoot the dog and take one of Slims puppies.
Though he seems well-mannered and friendly in his initial appearance in the novella, he is extremely blunt and not afraid to speak his mind, which is often at the expense of other characters feelings. Carlson seems to have a good relationship with the other ranch workers.
Unlike Lennie, however, George does change as the story progresses. The reader learns that he is capable of change and growth during his conversation with Slim, during which he admits that he once abused Lennie for his own amusement.
Carlson is head strong and stubborn as a mule. When he wants something to be done he either does it himself, or pesters other people until they will do it for him. He is described as a powerful, big-stomached man. He is important to this story because he can easily persuade someone to do somethings.
