Prefix: A prefix is a set of characters that is added to the beginning of the Bates number. This can be used to identify a specific case or document. Bates number: The Bates number is the unique identifier that is assigned to each page.
Bates Numbers are added to PDF files in the header and footer to identify pages. These numbers will often go in ascending order, meaning each consecutive page will automatically have a larger number on it. Bates Numbers can be paired with text or other objects in the document where they may appear.
Bates numbering best practices Use the right number of digits. In Bates numbering, the number of digits in a number is often used to indicate how many pages are in a specific document set. Add extra information. Make sure each number is unique. Keep it consistent.
Select Edit Insert Bates Numbering Remove to permanently remove Bates numbers from currently open files. Other header and/or footer elements, if any, are retained. An information box instructs you how to interpret the results of the operation.
These identifiers could include things like client names, dates, or case numbers in addition to page numbers. For example, pages in documents related to Jane Does case could be numbered as JDOE00001, JDOE00002, and so on, for added clarity.
Bates stamping can be used to mark and identify images with copyrights by putting a company name, logo, and/or legal copyright on them. This process provides identification, protection, and automatic consecutive numbering of the pages.
During the discovery phase of litigation, a large number of documents might require the use of unique identifiers for each page of each document for reference and retrieval. Bates numbering, named for the Bates Automatic Numbering-Machine, assigns an arbitrary unique identifier to each page.
It gained its name from the Bates Automatic Numbering-Machine, patented in the 1890s by Edwin G. Bates. This sequential-numbering stamp was used to manually mark each page in a record.
