To destroy buildings/units yourself you have to select structures or units that are able to attack then press the A key to issue a force attack order. If you hold down shift you only have to press the A key once and you can select all the structures/units you want to destroy.
However if you click on a blank area of the map with nothing selected and simultaneously press the ctrl key and a previously assigned group number then that grouping of units is undone. ctrl+alt+number to remove unit from a control group.
You first create a control group by selecting a unit, structure or group, holding the Control key and then pressing the number key you wish to bind them to. Once a control group is created you can add any unit or structure to that group by selecting it, holding the Shift key and pressing that same number.
Selecting and Deselecting Units or Buildings Add to Selection (Shift + Select Unit) - Add/Remove units or buildings from your current selection. Note: you can hold Shift, click and drag to add/remove multiple units.
It is possible to remove units via shift-clicking or shift-ctrl-clicking their portraits in the bottom panel, but just clicking and then shift-clicking any single unit seems easier and more unconditional. If you want to deselect all your units, just click another unit or let said unit die.
Free your mouse cursor of any selected unit. Draw a box on an empty piece of ground. Shift + the number you want to get rid of. Viola, your squads hot key has (hopefully) been removed.
Shift+# will add selected units to an existing group. Alt+# will create a new group with selected units and remove these units from existing group or groups. Ctrl+left-click a unit in the selection panel to select all units of that type. Shift+left-click a unit in the selection panel to remove that single unit.
