Women between the ages of 21 and 65 should get Pap smears every 35 years. Pap smears check for the presence of abnormal cells and can indicate whether the person either has or could develop cervical cancer. Most people receive normal results from the Pap smears.
You should absolutely continue to get Pap smear exams after menopause. Just because you are experiencing menopause symptoms or have gone through the change does not mean you are immune to cervical cancer.
The findings support recommendations in some countries, such as the United States, where a history of negative screening results is recommended for stopping screening at age 65, after which the risk of a new HPV infection developing into cervical cancer is very low, said Nicolas Wentzensen, M.D., Ph.
If youre 65 or older Youll only be invited again if a recent test was abnormal. If youre 65 or older and have never been for cervical screening, or have not had cervical screening since the age of 50, you can ask your GP for a test.
Updated cervical cancer screening guidelines from ACS recommend starting screening at age 25 with an HPV test and having HPV testing every 5 years through age 65. However, testing with an HPV/Pap cotest every 5 years or with a Pap test every 3 years is still acceptable.
After age 65, you can stop having cervical cancer screenings if you have never had abnormal cervical cells or cervical cancer, and youve had two or three negative screening tests in a row, depending on the type of test.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that all women between the ages of 21 and 65 should get regular Pap smears tests. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) do not recommend Pap smears for people under the age of 21.
Unfortunately, you can still get cervical cancer when you are older than 65. The only way to know it is safe to stop being tested after age 65 is if you have had several tests in a row that didnt find cancer within the previous 10 years, including at least 1 test in the previous 5 years.
