Its not possible to revert to the prior UI, however. Google apps are forward facing, and the updated Drive UI includes new features that will integrate with the Google Docs Editors apps even better. Over time, the updated UI will become easier to use and feel as familiar as the older version.
@PatrickSullivan, the shortcut to insert citations is Ctrl-Shift-P.
