Aldus Manutius, originally named Aldo Manuzio, was a Venetian printer active around 1500 who is credited with inventing the italic typeface. The term "italic" derives from Italy, reflecting Manutius's origins in Venice. He was among the first to utilize a movable type printing press and created a slanted letter style by cutting letters from metal, leading to what we now refer to as the italic typeface. It is technically known as the italic script, based on earlier styles.
