Aldus Manutius, originally named Aldo Manuzio, was a Venetian printer around 1500 who invented the italic typeface. The term "italic" refers to text that slants to the right, deriving its name from Italy, where Manutius was from. As one of the early printers, he utilized a movable type printing press to create these letters, cutting them from metal into a distinctive slanted style. Today, this is referred to as the italic typeface, although it is technically known as the italic script, based on earlier designs.
