In July 1985, psychologists Cindy Hassan and Phillip Shaver introduced a significant questionnaire in the Rocky Mountain News, aimed at exploring love and relationships. The questionnaire presented readers with three statements to evaluate their attachment styles: Option A describes those who easily connect with others but are uncomfortable with dependence, typically without fears of abandonment. Option B reflects individuals who seek closeness but often feel that their partners are distant, leading to worries about love and stability. Option C represents those who are uneasy with intimacy and find it hard to trust others. The insights from this questionnaire emphasize the importance of understanding one’s attachment style for improving relationship dynamics.

Determine how your parents behaved towards you. For instance, if your parent made you feel safe and secure, you likely have an attachment style that is healthy. If they made you feel unsafe or were inconsistent in their giving, you may have an attachment style that errs towards the unhealthy side.
Insecure-resistant (also known as Type C) is an attachment pattern identified by Ainsworth using the Strange Situation. This attachment type is not willing to explore and seeks greater proximity to the caregiver than the other attachment types.
Bowlby identified four types of attachment styles: secure, anxious-ambivalent, disorganised and avoidant.
There are three main attachment styles: secure, anxious, and avoidant. These are based on your first bonds as a child. Those with a secure attachment style are generally more trusting and responsive in relationships. People with anxious attachment style tend to put other peoples needs before their own.
There are four adult attachment styles: Anxious (also referred to as Preoccupied) Avoidant (also referred to as Dismissive) Disorganized (also referred to as Fearful-Avoidant) Secure.
Type B: Securely Attached (60-75% of sample): When the caregiver is present, the infant explores the strange environment, plays happily and uses the caregiver as a secure base. The infant shows moderate distress when separated from the caregiver goes to her for comfort when she returns and easily soothed on her return.
Most often, anxious attachment is due to misattuned and inconsistent parenting. Low self-esteem, strong fear of rejection or abandonment, and clinginess in relationships are common signs of this attachment style.
The best we can do as adults is make an effort to understand our own stories and use that information to grow as partners and friends. Secure. What it looks like: A lucky 60 percent of us have a secure attachment style. Anxious-preoccupied. Dismissive-avoidant. Fearful-avoidant. Disorganized.
