You can start defining the fundamental style of any typeface with control characters, typically this is the letter n and o in lowercase and the H and O in uppercase.
Blackletter is the oldest typeface style that still has docHub echoes in modern type. It emerged in Europe in the middle ages (around 1150 AD) and stuck around well into the 17th century especially in Germany.
Best Practices Of Combining Typefaces Combine a Sans Serif with a Serif # Avoid Similar Classifications # Assign Distinct Roles # Contrast Font Weights # Create a Variety of Typographic Colors # Dont Mix Moods # Contrast Distinct with Neutral # Avoid Combinations That are Too Disparate #
The first typeface was a Blackletter variety used by Johannes Gutenberg on the first printing press, starting in 1440. This typeface design was created to mimic the calligraphic handwriting used by monks to hand-transcribe manuscripts prior to the invention of the printing press.
There is a typographic rule of thumb for combining fonts from unrelated families: The more dissimilar the type designs, the better the mix. The rule, however, carries a caveat: one typeface should take the lead, and the other should be a supporting player. Two highly distinctive designs rarely combine well.
Keep it simple sometimes, one typeface with several font variations can be enough for the whole project. If you want to introduce a bit more contrast, its okay to use 2-3 typefaces. Make sure they balance and complement each other like people, opposites attract.
Standard Fonts Are Better Than Decorative Ones Contrary to beginner misconceptions, good typography most often consists of fairly simple font pairs. Handwritten and heavily decorative fonts rarely look relevant, and are often difficult to read, especially on websites. Dont be afraid to use standard and familiar fonts.
Mix serifs and sans serifs Try one serif and one sans serif. The two tend to work together well, particularly at contrasting sizes. Its worth noting here that, in the world of typography, theres an ongoing debate about whether serif or sans-serif fonts are best in terms of readability.
