An abnormal result means that cell changes were found on your cervix. This usually does not mean that you have cervical cancer. Abnormal changes on your cervix are likely caused by HPV. The changes may be minor (low-grade) or serious (high-grade). Most of the time, minor changes go back to normal on their own.
Cause. Most abnormal Pap tests are caused by HPV infections. Other types of infectionsuch as those caused by bacteria, yeast, or protozoa (Trichomonas)sometimes lead to minor changes on a Pap test called atypical squamous cells.
Endocervical cells absent. This means that the sampling of cells during your pap didnt include those inside-the-canal cells. If youve never had an abnormal pap in the past, its fine for an occasional pap to not sample these cells.
Test results can be inconclusive. This result is sometimes called ASC-US, which means atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. The cells didnt look quite like normal cells, but they couldnt really be classified as abnormal. In some cases, a poor sample can lead to inconclusive results.
[9] scant cellularity occurs due to increasing age but is not directly related to menopause. [3] This may be related to differences in the smear technique or accessibility of the transformation zone to sampling. This justifies our results also.
Unsatisfactory Pap test results: The lab sample may not have had enough cells, or the cells may have been clumped together or hidden by blood or mucus. Your health care provider will ask you to come in for another Pap test in 2 to 4 months.
ASC-US is the most common abnormal Pap test result. ASC-US stands for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. Squamous refers to the type of cells that make up the tissue that covers the cervix. LSILThis means that the cervical cells show changes that are mildly abnormal.
Inflammation on a Pap smear can be found in a patient of any age and may be attributable to a benign infection such as Candida vaginitis that need be treated only if the patient is symptomatic. Sexually transmitted infections can also cause an inflammatory reaction on the cervix and should be treated ingly.
