Minwax presents just ask Bruce I have this old nightst and I want to make it beautiful but Iamp;#39;m pretty new at this so I figured Iamp;#39;d just ask Bruce glad you asked Dave the first step in any project is prepare the wood now I prefer to start by sanding with number 120 grit sandpaper and I finish with Number 220 grit always sanding in the direction of the grain of the wood after that I wipe off all the dust next using a natural bristle brush I apply a liberal coat of Minwax pre-stained wood conditioner now the wood conditioner will help the wood absorb your stain evenly and will prevent the wood from turning blotchy now allow the conditioner to remain on the wood from 5 to 15 minutes then wipe off off any conditioner it doesnamp;#39;t absorb and now youamp;#39;re ready to stain the first thing I want to do is stir the can thoroughly mixing in any of the pigments that may have settled to the bottom then with a natural bristle brush Iamp;#39;m going to work the stain into t

Start by stripping off what you can (as described above), then seal the wood with a water-thin mix of de-waxed shellac and alcohol. Saturate the wood with the solution and wipe it off. Let it dry for 2 hours. Then switch to a 100 percent pigmented stain, such as Varathane (most stains are a mix of dye and pigment).
If you didnt, the stain may still be tacky. You should not apply your clear topcoat until the stain is no longer tacky and has been allowed to dry at least as long as the label recommends. To get rid of the excess stain now, take a cloth dampened with mineral spirits and use that to scrub down the piece.
Create a paste using non-gel toothpaste and baking soda. Rub the mixture into the wood, then wipe clean with a second damp cloth and dry immediately. You may need to repeat this process multiple times. When the mark is gone, revitalize the wood with furniture polish or oil.
What you want to go for is a finish that is known as water-white. This means that when it dries on the surface of the wood, it wont bring any color to the party. Just about any water-based finish fits into this category. There are also water-white lacquers that work very well.
How to Strip Stain From Wood Prep the Wood Surface. Before stripping the finish, remove all hardware and clean the wood surface with soap and water and let dry. Apply Stripping Gel. Scrape the Stripping Gel. Remove the Stripping Gel. Treat Scuffs and Holes. Sand the Wood. Clean the Surface.
Use a palm sander or a random orbital sander to quickly strip away imperfections and previous layers of stain to reveal the underlying natural wood. Work efficiently by starting with a coarse sandpaper in the 60-100 grit range and gradually switch to finer sandpapers rated closer to 150 grit.
Mix equal parts salt and olive oil to create a paste. Apply the paste to the stain and gently rub it using a microfiber cloth. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it away with a clean, damp cloth.
