There are four curly quote characters: the opening single quote ( ), the closing single quote ( ), the opening double quote ( ), and the closing double quote ( ). On Windows, hold down the alt key and type the four-digit character code on your numeric keypad (num lock must be activated).
Left quotes are coded as `` (it will the left-most key on the upper row below ~ in many keyboards). Right quotes are given by the two symbols (or you may want to use the single symbol ). Thus we have ``quote, unquote . The same goes for single quotes, or `quote, unquote.
The use of quotation marks, also called inverted commas, is very slightly complicated by the fact that there are two types: single quotes (` ) and double quotes ( ).
Single quotation marks are produced in LaTeX using ` and . Double quotation marks are produced by typing `` and . (The `undirected double quote character produces double right quotation marks: it should never be used where left quotation marks are required.)
The character is U+0022 QUOTATION MARK, also commonly called double quote (because it contains two marks). This character is also part of ASCII with the same encoding (0x22, decimal 34).
In American English, we use double quotation marks ( ) in most situations and single quotation marks ( ) only for quotes within quotes or certain titles within quotes.
LaTeX treats left and right quotes as different entities. For single quotes, ` (on British keyboards, this symbol is found on the key adjacent to the number 1) gives a left quote mark, and is the right. For double quotes, simply double the symbols, and LaTeX will interpret them ingly.
Quotation marks, double () or single (), are generally used for direct quotes, certain titles, and words used in a special manner. Quotation marks are ALWAYS used in pairs, one at the beginning of the quoted text and one at the end.
