How to tell if an ACL is torn or sprained?

A bad sprain can involve a small tear, but in most cases, it is only when the ligament has been stretched too far. ACL injuries are graded on a scale of one to three. Your doctor will determine the grade of injury you have following a physical examination and by using imaging tests such as X-rays or an MRI.

Did I tear my ACL or sprain my knee?

Therefore, an ACL sprain is a Grade 1 or 2 injury to the ACL. The ligament has sustained some minor to moderate tearing, but the ligament has remained intact and can still perform its designed function. An ACL tear is when the ligament has partially or fully torn and can no longer perform its designed function.

Can you still walk with a torn ACL?

The short answer is yes. After the pain and swelling subsides and if there is no other injury to your knee, you may be able to walk in straight lines, go up and down stairs and even potentially jog in a straight line. When youve torn your ACL you will lose a range of motion. Try bending your knee and then straightening it out. If you cant bend your knee to a 90 degree angle or straighten out your leg because of pain, stiffness and swelling, then it is likely that youve torn your ACL.

As with any sport or activity, the more you practice and play it, the greater the risk of injury. Todays prevalence of ACL tears is partially attributable to increased training, practice, and playing time which places a far too heavy workload on an athletes body.
