A positive discrimination index indicates that those students who got the test item correct also had a high overall exam score. When the discrimination index is negative it means that the examinees in the low performing group got the answer correct at a higher rate than the higher performing group.
Difficulty index is an index which expresses the proportion or percentage of students who answered the item/MCQ correctly. It is frequently called the p-value. The larger the percentage getting an item right, the easier the item the higher the difficulty index.
The discrimination index ranges from 01; closer to 1 indicates a higher discrimination value. If it is less than 0.2, it is a poor discrimination item; 0.20.29 is a fair item, 0.30.39 is a good item, and over 0.4 is a very good item with a high degree of discrimination [13].
The Discrimination Index is listed in decimal format and ranges between -1 and 1. What is a good value? For exams with a normal distribution, a discrimination of 0.3 and above is good; 0.6 and above is very good. Values close to 0 mean that most students performed the same on an item.
A discrimination index of 0.3 or greater is considered highly discriminating. Note: Item discrimination indicates the extent to which success on an item corresponds to success on the whole test. Any item with negative or zero discrimination will affect the discrimination of an assessment.
Index MCQs refers to multiple choice questions related to the topic of indexes, commonly seen in mathematics and computer science. Indexes, in mathematics, often represent exponential expressions or logarithmic relations.
The greater the positive value (the closer it is to 1.0), the stronger the relationship is between overall test performance and performance on that item. If the discrimination index is negative, that means that for some reason students who scored low on the test were more likely to get the answer correct.
