A finding of abnormal cells in a Pap test. It means there are abnormal squamous cells in the tissue that lines the outer part of the cervix. ASC-H may be a sign of a high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), which may become cervical cancer if untreated.
ASC-US is the most common abnormal Pap test result. ASC-US stands for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. Squamous refers to the type of cells that make up the tissue that covers the cervix. LSILThis means that the cervical cells show changes that are mildly abnormal.
ASCUS stands for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance and means your test results are abnormal. An abnormal result indicates there are some cells in your cervix that are not normal and need to be checked for possible HPV. ASCUS happens when your cells are not typical.
High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions look somewhat to very abnormal when looked at under a microscope. They are usually caused by chronic infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) and are found when a Pap test or biopsy is done.
It began in November 1996 and concluded at the end of 2000. Data analysis of the trials findings is ongoing. ASCUS stands for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance and LSIL for low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions.
Conclusions: The data obtained indicate an increase in positive histology results from the types of low grade (ASCUS-LSIL) to those of a high grade (HSIL).
ASCUS is the most common abnormal finding in a Pap test. It may be a sign of infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) or other types of infection, such as a yeast infection.
Cytological criteria for the diagnosis of ASCUS included nuclear enlargement to size 2.53 times that of an intermediate cell with a slightly increased ratio of nuclear/cytoplasmic area, mild variation in nuclear size or contour, and slight hyperchromasia with even chromatin (Fig. 1).
