You must provide the responsible partys Social Security Number. Fourth, always keep your EIN information up to date. You need to report changes in responsible party to the IRS within 60 days using Form 8822-B. Use the same form to report changes in address. Finally, your assigned EIN is yours for life. If you made a mistake on your EIN application, such as if you listed a non-owner or officer in Item 3 or elsewhere, do not submit a new EIN application, Form SS-4. Instead, submit a letter to the IRS, preferably on your company letterhead.
The IRS cannot cancel your EIN. Once an EIN has been assigned to a business entity, it becomes the permanent Federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. If you realize there was a mistake on your return, you can amend it using Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. For example, a change to your filing status, income, deductions, credits, or tax liability means you need to amend your return.
Applying for a New EIN If you need a new EIN due to an ownership change, you want to obtain the number as quickly as possible. You can usually apply online and have your number within a few hours, at most. If you face a more complicated situation, you may have to apply via a mail-in form.
Use Form 8822-B to report changes to your responsible party, address or location. Changes in responsible parties must be reported to the IRS within 60 days.
If the EIN was recently assigned and filing liability has yet to be determined, send Business Name Change requests to the IRS address where you file your return. In some situations a name change may require a new Employer Identification Number (EIN) or a final return.
