Wrist sprains usually take from 2 to 10 weeks to heal, but some take longer. Usually, the more pain you have, the more severe your wrist sprain is and the longer it will take to heal.
Focus on aerobics. Cardiovascular exercises like cycling, running, elliptical, and even swimming provide a great overall workout without putting extra strain on your wrists. As a bonus, these activities improve your endurance and help you compete more effectively.
What Are the Symptoms of Wrist/Hand Sprains? Immediate pain in the wrist or hand after a direct blow or twist. Pain and stiffness with movement or activity in hand and wrist.
Some doctors suggest that you go back and forth between hot and cold. If you have an elastic bandage, keep it on for the next 24 to 36 hours. The bandage should be snug but not so tight that it causes numbness or tingling. To rewrap the wrist, wrap the bandage around the hand a few times, beginning at the fingers.
Treatment Rest. Try not use your wrist for at least 48 hours. Ice. Apply ice immediately after the injury to keep the swelling down. Compression. Wear an elastic compression bandage to reduce swelling. Elevation. As often as possible, rest with your wrist raised up higher than your heart.
Sudden movements When it comes to a sprained wrist, thinking that you can fight through the injury is never a good idea. Sudden movements such as returning to regular activities too fast or putting too much pressure on an unstable joint can increase the ligament tear and prolong healing.
In rare cases of a full tear of ligaments, patients may need surgery to restore the full use of the wrist ligaments. Commonly, a grade 1 sprain can take one to three weeks for recovery, a grade 2 can take three to six weeks, and a grade 3 recovery can last several months.
