so here is a simple demonstration of authentication services specifically chap also known as challenge handshake authentication protocol chat within chap the server sends a challenge message or question to the client the client then has to provide a valid answer response to the challenge message in order to successfully authenticate so similar to PAP the client enters his username and password but only sends in the username to the chap server the chap server then creates a specialized challenge message for that password and sends it to the client the client then combines that challenge message to the password in order to create a challenge response or a very unique hash the client then sends the hash to the chap server but the chap server already undergoes its own calculations to create an expected challenge response the server then Matt then compares the two hashes and if they match then the client can successfully authenticate into the note into the network
