The Unique Entity ID is generated in SAM.gov. If you are registered in SAM.gov (active or not), you already have a Unique Entity ID. It is viewable at SAM.gov. If you are new to SAM.gov and will be registering for the first time, you will get your Unique Entity ID (SAM) during registration.
How much will it cost to get a UEI number or to register in SAM.gov? Obtaining the new, government-owned UEI number is FREE for all federal grant and agreements, and contract applicants, through the registration process in SAM.gov.
On April 4, 2022, the unique entity identifier used across the federal government changed from the DUNS Number to the Unique Entity ID (generated by SAM.gov).
The SAM number actually is known as a Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) Code. Once youve completed the SAM registration process, the government will provide you with a CAGE Code, which is a five-character identifier for your business.
The Federal Government has transitioned from the use of the DUNS Number to the Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) as the primary means of entity identification for Federal awards government-wide.

The Unique Entity ID is the official identifier for doing business with the U.S. Government as of April 4, 2022. Entities registering in SAM.gov are assigned a Unique Entity ID as a part of the registration process. Entity uniqueness continues to be validated by an entity validation service.
