Parenthetical Citations: The first time you reference a version of the Bible, in the in-text citations, give the name of the edition (italicized), followed by a comma and the abbreviated book (see back of handout), chapter, and verse. Use a period, not a colon, between the chapter and verse: John 3.16.
Contextomy refers to the selective excerpting of words from their original linguistic context in a way that distorts the sources intended meaning, a practice commonly referred to as quoting out of context.
It means taking a specific verse out of context from the original message the original author intended to convey to his original audience. For instance Jeremiah 29:11. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. - Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV)
If a statement or remark is quoted out of context, the circumstances in which it was said are not correctly reported, so that it seems to mean something different from the meaning that was intended. Thomas says that he has been quoted out of context.
In this field, eisegesis is regarded as poor exegesis. In the field of biblical proof texts, Christian theologians and missionaries are often accused of practicing eisegesis using isolated, out-of-context quotations from the Christian Bible to establish a proposition or to read Christ into the Hebrew Bible.
We might read into a verse something that it wasnt intended to speak into. Other times we miss important key truths the original author meant to be understood from his words. We forget to keep in mind the reason the words were penned in the first place.
Taking the Bible out of context is easy to do and it often happens when we do not read the verse as a part of a whole. We dont do this with other books we read because without the context of the story, the words dont make sense.
Quotation marks should begin and end your quoting of Scripture. The beginning quotation mark means this is where you start copying and then the end quotation mark means this is where you stop copying. A reminder that quotation marks mean you are copying word for word. Do not change anything.
