Formerly, when the Disciples had gone out, on mission, they had not lacked anything. Now they would need a purse, a bag and even a sword. The saying is heavily ironical, for Jesus knew that now He would have to face universal opposition and be put to death. But the disciples misunderstood Him and produced weapons.
If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever puts faith in me, just as the scripture has said: From deep within him streams of living water will flow. John 7:37, 38. Jesus was speaking of what would happen when God would anoint Jesus followers with holy spirit beginning at Pentecost.
The cup carries immense importance in the New Testament; it is central to Christian belief and practice, symbolizing the New Covenant in Christs blood during the Last Supper. In 1 Corinthians 11:25, Jesus uses a cup of wine to signify His blood, soon to be shed for humanitys redemption.
It means complete. In submitting to the Fathers will in this, Jesus completely obeyed the Father in His earthly life. Thus, He experienced the fullness of obedience. That obedient submission was the last task Jesus had to complete to qualify as the perfect, singular sacrifice for our sins.
Jesus himself speaks of the cup as a metaphor for the suffering and death he will face as he takes on the punishment for our sins (see Matthew 20:2223). As he is about to actually drink the cup of his suffering, Jesus is feeling the full weight of what this means for him.
This verse shows Jesus humanity. He was scared knowing what was going to happen to him. He was saying, If there is any other way to save humanity - take this from me. But not because I want you to. He knew his flesh was weak. He also knew to seek his Fathers will and faithfully choosing to submit to his will.
ESV Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed. NIV Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done. NASB One who is gracious to a poor person lends to the Lord, And He will repay him for his good deed.
In this passage, Jesus has promised the coming of the Holy Spirit (John 14:1617). That reference implied that this Spirit of Truth would be in believers, presumably looking forward to Pentecost (Acts 2:14).
