Turn off overtype mode: Click File Options. Click Advanced. Under Editing options, clear both the Use the Insert key to control overtype mode and the Use overtype mode check boxes.
Select the text with the gray highlight and click the arrow next to the Clear Formatting button in the Font section of the Home tab. Then, choose Clear All Formatting and the gray highlight will be gone. If these methods dont work, try changing your documents theme.
Select the text that you want to remove an effect from. On the Home tab, in the Font group, click Clear Formatting.
Turn the display of formatting marks on or off Go to File Options Display. button is turned on or off. Clear any check boxes for ones you dont want always displayed.
Clear or remove tab stops in Word Go to Home and select the Paragraph dialog launcher . Select Tabs. Do one of the following: Select a tab stop and select Clear. Select Clear All to remove all tab stops. Select OK.

Select the border of the text box that you want to delete, and then press DELETE. Make sure that the pointer is on the border of the text box and not inside the text box. If the pointer is not on the border, pressing DELETE will delete the text inside the text box.
