On Poor Things, Ryan had to shoot on 35mm in both colour and black and white, create unusual lenses, work with rare film stocks, and shoot in studios where his director was trying to avoid typical lighting.
The movie Poor Things, released in 2023 and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, was shot on film using ARRICAM Lite (LT) Camera, ARRICAM Studio (ST) Camera, ARRIFLEX 416 Plus Camera, ARRIFLEX 765 Camera, Beaumont Vista Vision Camera and Angenieux Optimo 24-290 mm T2.
Poor Things: Special look for a special movie Ryan used the ARRICAM LT/ST paired with a diverse glass: Optex Super Cine, ARRI/Zeiss Master Zoom, ARRI Ultra Prime, TLS Petzval, and Angenieux Optimo Lenses.
The idea behind the superwide fisheye lens Lanthimoss concept was based on early photography references that had a vignette and looked like a porthole into the world. To achieve this effect, Robbie Ryan used a 4mm lens (T2 OpTex Super Cine) that captured a super wide view without too much distortion.
Robbie Ryan and Yorgos Lanthimos use a 4mm lens on a camera too large for it to convey severe emotions in their 2023 film Poor Things. Using a fisheye lens to present a characters emotions dates back decades, but Ryan and Lanthimos have taken the practice and honed it in their collaborations.
Ryans camera of choice for Poor Things was Arris Arricam ST, which he calls our workhorse for the 35mm format, particularly for its HD-IVS video tap and top-mounted magazine. He sometimes used an Arricam LT as a second camera.
Filming. Principal photography took place in Hungary, beginning in August 2021 at Origo Studios in Budapest and wrapping that December. It is the first feature film to be partially shot on Kodaks 35mm Ektachrome color reversal motion picture film stock since its revival in 2018.
Surreal, fantastical, and evocative are just a few of the adjectives that best describe the unique (and now Oscar-nominated) visual style of director Yorgos Lanthimoss film Poor Thingsthink Merchant Ivory meets sci-fi in a dystopian Gothic fairytale.
