Whether you call it outpatient surgery, ambulatory surgery*, office surgery, or same-day surgery, it means the same thing: surgical procedures that dont require an overnight hospital stay. Patients and their family members or friends are important members of the care team.
ASCs get the lesser of the actual charge or the ASC payment rate for each procedure or service. CMS sets the standard ASC covered surgical procedures payment rate using the ASC CF and the ASC relative payment weight product for each separately payable procedure or service.
ASCs use modifier -52 to indicate the discontinuance of a procedure not requiring anesthesia. Contractors apply a 50 percent payment reduction for discontinued radiology and other procedures not requiring anesthesia. ASC services billed with modifier -52 modifier are not subject to the multiple procedure reduction.
Modifier 51 Multiple Procedures indicates that multiple procedures were performed at the same session. It applies to: Different procedures performed at the same session. A single procedure performed multiple times at different sites.
How to bill for ASC facility services Place of service 24 is used for ASC claims. ASC Modifiers FB, FC, LT, PA, PB, PC, RT, TC, 52, 73 and 74 can be reported on the ASC claims. Modifier 26 is used by physicians only and not ASCs. Ambulatory surgical center (ASC) pass-through devices.
Modifier SG must be appended as the first modifier to all surgical procedure codes (CPT/HCPCS) billed by an Ambulatory Surgery Center.
ASCs specialize in types of surgery that are planned in advance. These are often known as elective procedures or outpatient surgeries. The procedures performed at an ASC are broad in scope and can include (but are not limited to): Orthopedics.
