letamp;#39;s close our discussion of text functions by showing you an example where i taught somebody at the university of houston a little bit about text functions and save the person hours and certainly reduce the number of errors they would make no matter how good you are how smart you are and how hard you try if youamp;#39;re gonna do things manually that you should do with text functions youamp;#39;re gonna make mistakes so hereamp;#39;s what happens okay i think iamp;#39;ve got this just about the right idea although iamp;#39;ve changed obviously these are not real social security members so the university of houston gets from a database student social security numbers to change them to whatamp;#39;s called peoplesoft id numbers or whatever they would like to eliminate the hyphens or dashes and replace the first two numbers by zero and so people who had this job were actually doing this manually okay in other words they would go through and make the zero zero three

Whether the digits in your cell are formatted as text, numbers, or the special Social Security number format, you can use the same functions. To display only the last four digits of identification numbers, use the CONCATENATE, RIGHT, and REPT functions.
Using Formulas to Format SSNs Use the formula =TEXT(A1,000-00-0000) where A1 represents the cell with the SSN. This function converts the SSN into a text format with dashes. Its essential to review the results for accuracy, ensuring all SSNs are correctly formatted.
To calculate the sum of squares in Excel, follow these steps: Open your Excel Worksheet. Enter the data you want to calculate the Sum of Squares from into the cells. Select the cells containing the data. Click on the Formulas tab at the top of the page. Type =SUMSQ into the formula bar and press enter.
Display Social Security numbers in full Select the cell or range of cells that you want to format. On the Home tab, next to Number in the Number Format box. , click the arrow, and then click More Number Formats. In the Format Cells dialog box, under Category, click Special. In the Type list, click Social Security Number.
If do not like the dashes, dont choose the Soc Sec format. To allow for possible leading zeros (not possible with SSNs?), use the Custom format 0000000000 (10 zeros). On the other hand, if you typed (or read from a text file) 123-45-7890 with the dashes, Excel recognizes that as text, not a numeric value.
The nine-digit SSN is composed of three parts: The first set of three digits is called the Area Number. The second set of two digits is called the Group Number. The final set of four digits is the Serial Number.
Example 1: By Using the Formula Deliberate the Excel worksheet. In the Excel sheet, select the row C to remove all dashes from SSN, place the pointer in the cell D2 and enter the formula that is =SUBSTITUTE(C2,-,) then press enter tab that will display the social security number without dashes.
Create a formula for each FICA tax. Under the column for Social Security Tax, or cell C3, put =B30. 042. This is the formula you use to calculate Social Security tax: you multiply the employees income by the Social Security rate, which is 4.2 percent, equivalent to 0.042.
