XPS stands for XML Paper Specification. Thats because it contains page layout information written in the XML page description language. Essentially, this type of language describes the structure and content of a document, including its layout and appearance, making it suited for printing for example.
XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
The survey spectrum is a low energy resolution, high sensitivity acquisition across the entire binding energy scale, typically 1200 to -5 eV. It is acquired at a high pass energy, for AXIS instruments this is 160 eV, and the step size is 1 eV.
The intensity of photoelectrons emitted at the surface (Is) is determined by the Beer-Lambert Law: Is = Ioe-d/ where Iois the intensity of the photoelectrons emitted at depth d below the surface and is the inelastic mean free path of the electron in the material.
The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy method is useful for measuring the work functions of metals and alloys. 2. This method allows one to determine the contact potential difference between the metal sample and the spectrometer.
Typically ranging 120 minutes for a broad survey scan that measures the amount of all detectable elements, typically 115 minutes for high resolution scan that reveal chemical state differences (for a high signal/noise ratio for count area result often requires multiple sweeps of the region of interest), 14 hours for
